January 2012 Youth Holiday Programme Outline

Week One

Monday 16th – Waiwera Hot Pools

Starting our summer holiday programme with a Recreate favourite – we’ll be swimming, soaking, slipping and sliding at Waiwera Thermal Resort. Recreate will provide a BBQ lunch.

Tuesday 17th – Gold Mine Discovery Day

Walk through the underground tunnels and see how the miners used to work; check out a gold bearing quartz vein; watch a demonstration of the stamper battery in action… We’ll have the chance to pan for gold too (!) ... Maybe we can come home rich !?!

(Bring a packed lunch, warm clothes and sturdy walking shoes – which may get a little muddy in the mines!)

Wednesday 18th – Megazone shooting competition

The trick is to work as a team (we’ll split into groups), and always watch your partner’s back as well as your own! After lunch, we’ll head to either the beach or the movies - depending on the weather.

Thursday 19th – Hamilton Zoo

Sumatran tiger, white rhinoceros, red panda, stripy zebra and lots of cheeky little monkeys!

We’re going to take a look at these and many more of our favourite animals at the Hamilton Zoo. We’ll also have a little quiz at the beginning and end to test our knowledge and see what we’ve learnt about these furry friends…

Friday 20th – Rainforest Express train trip

Deep in the heart of the Waitakere Ranges we’ll take an exciting train trip to one of Auckland's hidden treasures - the Upper Nihotupu Dam. Surrounded by ancient Kauri forest, the train takes us over bridges and through tunnels filled with glow worms (along with the occasional cave weta!) to the dam - where we’ll have a picnic lunch.

(Please bring a packed lunch and water bottle as there will be no food-buying facilities)

Week Two:

Monday 23rd – Rainbows End

You know the drill… Join us for a fun-filled day of rides and thrills at the one and only Rainbows End! (Let’s see if you can convince Katie Burson to go on any of the scary rides J …my vote is for the Fear Fall!)

Tuesday 24th – Glass Bottom Boat

It’s time for another road trip to the beautiful Goat Island Marine Reserve! We’ll cruise around the Island in a glass bottomed boat – you may even get to see a sting ray! Bring a packed lunch for a picnic on the beach afterwards, and keep those fingers crossed for beautiful, sunny weather!

Wednesday 25th – Party on Waiheke with more Recreate friends

For those of you who missed out on the Youth Camp or are on the waiting list, this is the perfect alternative. We’re going to Waiheke Island for the day to visit the Recreate Youth Camp crew! This will be amazing!

(Lunch will be provided by Recreate, and all activities will be done at the camp)

Thursday 26th – Gourmet Chocolate Making

Mmmmm Mmm! We’re going to Chocolate Heaven! Not only do we get to make delicious, gourmet chocolates… but we get to eat them afterwards too!

Friday 27th – Finishing with a blast - of Paint – in the form of balls !

It’ll be messy and at times a little scary(!), but in the end it will be oh so much fun! After all the training we’ve been doing at Megazone over the years, it’s time to try our skills with actual (fake) bullets… We’re going to PAINT BALL! Protective gear will be provided – but sturdy shoes that can get dirty are essential. For those of you who still have energy left after that, you can have unlimited rides on the hydro-slides at West Wave, while the rest of us soak our weary bones in the wave pool or spa pool… So don’t forget your togs and towel!
